Two
... Phuket has long been known as the gateway to the Similan Islands and Burma Banks (Myanmar). As well as being a busy island, Phuket is also the base for over 100 liveaboard dive boats. All budgets are catered for and trips can be from one day to one week liveaboard. The 2nd programme on the DVD takes you around many of the dive sites in the Similan Islands plus Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, Richelieu Rock. You will see a very friendly Moray Eel and the sight of the awesome Whale Shark and Manta Ray. Another popular area for divers is Khao Lak. Khao Lak is around 100 km up the coast from Phuket and offers day diving to a few dive sites plus the popular Bangsak wreck as well as a large number of liveaboards to the Similans and Burma. The Bangsak is a small tin mining vessel, which is home to many types of fish including Frog Fish, Sea Horses, Scorpion Fish, Leopard Sharks and occasional Whale Sharks. Racha Island (Raya in Thai) is south of Phuket and offers some excellent diving. Racha Yai is the easier of the two islands with hard and soft coral gardens and usually good visibility. Racha Noi is further south and offers excellent advanced diving. Strong currents tend to prevail but you are rewarded with beautiful pristine coral gardens and large schools of Barracuda. In Summary, the Similans, Racha, Phuket and Khao Lak offer something for all divers young or old, experienced or beginner, which is why many divers come back again and again. |
